Indian
Institute of Science, Bangalore has invited applications for admission to the
four-year Bachelor of Science (B.S) Programme for 2013. The four-year BS
Programme is organized into eight semesters. The final semester is devoted
exclusively to a research project. The major disciplines available in the BS
Programme are Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics
and Physics. The batch of students joining in 2013 will graduate in June 2017.
Students
specializing in any of the above disciplines will have to take a set of
prescribed core and elective courses in the chosen discipline. They will also
take courses in Engineering, Humanities and Inter-disciplinary areas for a
well-rounded learning experience. While a student specializes in a major
discipline, he/she can also broaden his/her knowledge and skills by taking
courses in other disciplines. Students who take a sufficient number of
designated courses in a discipline other than their major will qualify for a
‘minor’ in that discipline. The combination of courses taken by a student will
be listed in his/her Degree certificate.
Applicant
should have completed their II PUC / 12th standard in 2012. Those who are
expecting to complete their II PUC / 12th standard in 2013 are also eligible to
apply. Applicant must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main
subjects during their II PUC / 12th Standard. Those who have studied Biology,
Statistics, Electronics, Computer Science etc., in addition to Physics,
Chemistry and Mathematics are also eligible to apply. The candidates must have
secured a first class or 60% or equivalent grade (relaxed to pass class for
SC/ST candidates) in the II PUC / 12th standard examination.
About
120 students will be admitted to the Programme. Seats will be allotted to
general and special categories as per Government regulations. Reservation for
SC/ ST/ OBC/ Physically-Handicapped (PH) and Kashmiri-Migrant (KM) candidates
will be as per Government of India regulations, and following the National
List. The Institute uses the merit lists of existing highly competitive
national level entrance examinations such as KVPY, IIT-JEE (Main and Advanced)
and NEET-UG for admission to the BS Programme. Students desirous of applying to
the BS Programme must take at least one of these above examinations.
Under
the KVPY scheme, those in KVPY-SA (appeared in 2011, and selected for the
Fellowship), KVPY-SB (appeared in 2012 and selected for the Fellowship),
KVPY-SX (appeared in 2012 and selected for the Fellowship) and KVPY Fellows
selected through the Empowerment Initiative for SC/ST candidates are eligible.
Under the IIT-JEE-Main stream, those appearing in 2013 and securing a minimum
of 60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PH) are eligible.
In
the IIT-JEE-Advanced stream, those appearing in 2013 and securing a minimum of
60% (GN), 54% (OBC-NCL) and 30% (SC/ST/PH) are eligible. In the NEET-UG stream,
those appearing in 2013 and getting selected in the main merit list are
eligible for admission to the BS Programme.
The
selection will be based on the performance of the candidates who have applied
in any one of the National level examinations listed above. A separate merit
list of candidates who have applied will be prepared for each of these national
examinations and the seats will be offered based on the performance in the
examination and the number of seats available. A candidate who has qualified in
multiple examinations listed above will be included in all the appropriate
merit lists. Separate merit lists will be prepared for candidates belonging to
different reserved categories, as per standard Government of India regulations.
Application
can be submitted only online. The online application may be submitted by at the
IISc website www.iisc.ernet.in/ug up to 30th April 2013. The application fee
is Rs. 400/- for GN/OBC/KM candidates and Rs. 200/- for SC/ST/PH categories.
This can be paid online using Net-banking, Visa Card/ Master Card, Debit/Credit
Cards. Offline Payment through SBI/Canara Bank branches using Challan is also
available. The bank service charge is extra and has to be borne by the
applicant.
As
the first step, the online application is to be completed by following the
specific instructions provided at the website for receiving applications, on or
before 30th April 2013. Specific instructions for filling the online
application form are available at the UG website http://www.iisc.ernet.in/ug.
Applicant
should click on the ‘online application link’, to open the ‘Admissions 2013’,
page and then click on the ‘Instructions for filling the Application Form’,
link to read the instructions or to download a file that contains the
instructions. Online Applications will
be accepted up to April 30, 2013.
The first
set of admission offers will be made to KVPY candidates in May 2013. The next
set of admission offers will be announced in the middle of June 2013. More
offers for admission will be made in July 2013. Candidates who are offered
admission will be invited for mandatory day-long counselling sessions at the
Institute. Classes will commence on 1st August 2013.
The
annual Tuition Fee is Rs.10,000/-. Other fee and deposits are also there.
Depending on their performance in national examinations such as KVPY, IITJEE
(Main and Advanced), and NEET-UG, students will be able to avail themselves of
the standard fellowships offered by agencies such as KVPY and DST-INSPIRE.

Those
who travel to the Institute for attending the counselling are eligible for
reimbursement of Second-Class Railway / Bus fare by the shortest route from the
place of residence to the Institute, both ways. Those travelling to the
Institute for joining the Institute are eligible for reimbursement of
Second-Class Railway / Bus fare by the shortest route from the place of
residence to the Institute one way. A duly filled-in TA form with journey
tickets should be submitted to the Admissions Unit, within 15 days of joining
the Institute. Beyond this period, no claim will be accepted.
